You can check out the TAPI external USB telephony device from Way2call

Hi,
I've been having trouble getting any TAPI samples to work and I've
come to the conclusion that it is because I am using a standard data
modem and not a voice modem.
I aim to write a TAPI asnwering machine, so I assume a voice modem is
necessary?
Can anyone recommend a good external, usb, voice modem that supports
TAPI?
Also, how can I tell if a modem supports TAPI? Is there a list
somewhere?
Thanks in advance,
Carl

Sure. I can recommend two that will work just fine:
The Rosewill RNX-56USB-AG and the HiRO H50113.
BUT, for either of these modems, use the driver that's
listed for the H50113 on HiRO's website: www.hiroinc.com.
It's driver version 2.2.98.0. The 2.2.102.0 driver that
Windows installs by default does not support voice.

I went through quite a lot of headaches but finally got 2.2.98.0 installed a
while back and now I just noticed that 2.2.102.0 is back. I do not allow Windows
to auto update, but rather inform me when updates are available so I can check
out what it wants to install.

What do I have to do to prevent this BS from happening again?

BTW, the Way2Call device is excellent and works way better any recently
available modem.

Bring up the Control Panel, click on “Windows Update”,
and then “Check for updates”. Wait for the list of
suggested updates to be displayed. Then click on the
link for “…optional updates are available.” Right click
on the optional update for your LSI modem and click on
“Hide update”. After you have done that, Windows Update
will no longer try to update the modem driver.
That was my original intent but one must have slipped by me. I noticed the
2.2.98.0 download is getting harder to find on the HIRO website through links
and menus so I recommend once you get a copy to archive it on your PC.
